Toyota A25A-FXS 2.5L Engine Specs, Problems, Reliability, Info

Toyota 2.5 A25A-FXS Hybrid Engine Info
The Toyota A25A-FXS is a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder, gasoline NA engine with the D-4S injection from the Dynamic Force series that was introduced in 2017. It is basically an Atkinson cycle hybrid version of the 2.5L A25A-FKS engine. The A25A-FXS also has a very high compression ratio (14:1) and one of the best thermal efficiencies in the world - 41 percent. It is used in many popular Toyota and Lexus hybrid vehicles like the Camry Hybrid, RAV4 Hybrid, Lexus NX 350h/400h+/450h+, and Lexus RX 350h/450h+. Let's find out what makes this engine so efficient and unique.
2.5L A25A-FXS Engine Features
The A25A-FXS hybrid engine is almost identical in design to the standard 2.5-liter A25A-FKS unit. It has the same aluminum, open-deck type cylinder block with cast-in iron liners and a balancing mechanism. On top of the block, there is also an aluminum 16-valve DOHC head with laser-cladded intake valve seats. Camshafts are chain-driven (a low-friction single-row timing chain is used) and both of them come with phaser adjusters. Electronically controlled VVT-iE is used for the intake camshaft, while the exhaust camshaft has conventional hydraulic VVT.
The A25A-FXS also has a combined fuel injection system called D-4S: direct injection at medium and high engine loads, port fuel injection at low speeds, and combined port and direct injection for mid-range loads. Throttle control is ETCS-i. This engine also features a cooling system with an electric water pump, electronically controlled thermostat, cooled exhaust exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system, exhaust manifold with integrated catalytic converter, and additional vacuum pump for brake booster.
A25A-FXS vs A25A-FKS
Unlike Toyota's A25A-FKS engine, which adopts a traditional Otto-type four-stroke piston cycle, the A25A-FXS operates on an Atkinson cycle (also known as the Atkinson-Miller cycle). The A25A-FXS features a very high, 14:1 compression ratio and delayed intake valve closing to increase efficiency. Delayed intake valve closing (by controlling the intake cam via VVT-iE) allows some air and fuel mixture to escape back into the intake manifold during the compression stroke. The actual compression ratio may vary from the specified 14:1 ratio.
While the Atkinson-Miller principle may significantly improve fuel efficiency, it also brings some power drop. But this cycle is perfect for hybrid vehicles, as that power loss is compensated by the electric motor.

A25A-FXS Engine Problems and Reliability
The 2.5L A25A-FXS hybrid version is not so different from the regular A25A-FKS engine, which is considered highly reliable and often lasts over 250,000 miles. But no matter how well-designed an engine is, it can still have issues or failures, especially if it is not properly maintained. Here are some known problems with the A25A-FXS engine so far.
EGR Cooler Corrosion
Some early models (pre-2022) had issues with EGR system. The most common problem is a heat exchanger leak caused by corrosion, which allows coolant to enter the engine. Symptoms include white smoke coming from the exhaust pipe and a drop in coolant level.
Complexity
This engine is full of electronics and complex systems. The D-4S injection mitigate carbon buildup, but there are also twice as many injectors and an additional high pressure fuel pump. These parts are expensive and need more care. There is also an electronically controlled cooling system with an electric water pump and an electric coolant bypass valve. As life shows, such systems are less reliable and more expensive to repair.
Oil Leaks
The A25A-FXS has a lot of oil leakage issues. Common places for oil leaks include the cylinder head/valve cover gasket, timing chain covers, oil pan gasket and the stiffening crankcase.
Toyota 2.5L A25A-FXS Longevity
The Toyota A25A-FXS 2.5L hybrid engine requires proper care, high-quality fuel, regular oil changes and maintenance. But at the same time the engine is still designed for longevity with adequate power output, relying on NA technologies instead of turbocharging. As a result, the A25A-FXS is a highly efficient hybrid engine with excellent durability, frequently lasting over 250,000 miles.
